Mountain Checkout
Flying in mountains is a breath-taking experience. However, without the proper training and knowledge it can be very unforgiving. Learn to fly safely in the mountains with us. This checkout is mandatory for renters who plan on flying in, or over, the mountains.
PREREQUISITES FOR ENROLLMENT
To enroll for the Mountain Checkout course, you must be at least 17 years of age, hold a valid Category 3 Medical Certificate or higher and hold a valid PPL.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
KNOWLEDGE
The applicant shall complete the 5 hour Mountain Flying ground school. The ground school is based on Sparky Imeson’s Mountain Flying Bible: Revised Edition, and is completed over the course of two days (2.5 hrs/day).
EXPERIENCE
The Mountain Checkout is about a 2.5 hour flight through the Coastal Mountains. It includes both low flying within the mountains and flying above the mountains at high altitudes; as well, it includes emergency procedures, box-canyon turns, and airstrip operations at Tipella—a gravel strip tucked up against a mountain serving a logging community at the north-end of Harrison Lake.
COSTS
Ground School Tuition1 $90
Mountain Flying Bible $60
3 Hours Dual (@$175/hr) $525
Ground Briefing (1 hrs@$45/hr) $45
Total (without taxes) $720
1 We hold the ground school when there are enough people enrolled. If this doesn’t work for you, you can complete the ground school on a one-on-one basis with an instructor; however, this will cost more as you will be charged according to our ground briefing rate of $45/hr.
2 The 3 hours is an approximation.
3 The 1 hours is an approximation.
FEE SCHEDULE
Your initial cost to start your training with us is $80—the cost to enroll in the ground school. After this, the dual flight and ground briefing can be paid for on either a pay-as-you-go basis, or you can put money on your account with us and costs will be deducted from your account as they arise. We accept Visa, MasterCard, Debit, and Cash.
