VFR Over the Top Rating

The VFR Over the Top Rating increases the versatility of the PPL by allowing you to fly in a wider range of weather conditions. With a VFR Over the top rating, a pilot can fly above or between cloud layers, as long as the weather at both the departure and the destination airports is VFR and is expected to remain so for a specified period of time. A Commercial pilot licence includes the VFR OTT rating.

PREREQUISITES FOR ENROLLMENT

To begin training for the VFR Over-The-Top Rating, you must be at least 17 years of age, and hold a medically valid Private Pilot Licence.

COSTS

Transport Canada Minimums

Ground School Tuition1 $50
15 Hours Dual (@$175/hr)2 $2625
Ground Briefings (8 hrs@$45/hr)3 $360
Transport Canada Fees4 $30
Total (without taxes) $3065

1 We hold the ground school when there are enough people enrolled. If this doesn’t work for you, you can complete the ground school on a one-on-one basis with an instructor; however, this will cost more as you will be charged according to our ground briefing rate of $45/hr.

2 This is an estimate. The amount of dual time required is dependent on many factors.

3 This is an estimate. For every dual flight there is about 30 minutes of briefing time. Each dual flight is approximately one hour. For example, with 15 hours of dual there are approximately 15 dual flights; therefore, there is about 7.5 hours of briefing (one half-hour for each dual flight).

4 This is the fee payable to Transport Canada for issuing the rating ($30).

FEE SCHEDULE

The dual flight training, solo flight training, and ground briefings can be paid for on either a pay-as-you-go basis, or you can put money on your account with us and costs will be deducted from your account as they arise. You will also need to enroll in ground school at some point (we strongly recommend doing it before your flight training); the cost is $50. We accept Visa, MasterCard, Debit, and Cash.

The Transport Canada fee is payable to the Receiver General of Canada and are due when the application for the VFR Over the Top Rating is submitted.
