Island Flight to Tofino
There is nothing more exhilarating and scenic than a flight in a small aircraft hovering at around 4500 feet above the Straits of Georgia. You can actually see the outlines of all the various islands as marked in the charts…. This here is a flight originating from Pitt Meadows, heading South with check point at Boundary Bay, and then we cross the Georgia Straits and fly towards Active pass and head for Nanaimo. But, we actually fly towards the Alberni Valley and we could see Alberni inlet and Sproat Lake. We fly towards the Ocean and flyover Bamfield and the Pacific National Rim Park and with a Northerly heading we fly pass Uclulet and with the view of Kennedy Lake, we set up for the final approach into Tofino Airport. On the way back , we followed the Tofino – Alberni highway heading towards Port Alberni, and with a altitude of 5500 ft. we could see to the NW, Comox and Courtnay. Qualicum Beach is coming up soon on our windshield, and we could see Parksville, and the Islands of Denman, Hornby, Lesqueti and Texada coming in sight as well. It is simply magic. We had to make sure that we fly within glide distance of a shoreline and as well, close to the Southern tip of Lesqueti Island to avoid the military training zone over Nonoose Bay. From there we look East to Sechelt and and from Sechelt we fly to Bowen Island, looking North pass the Howe Sound, and then continue along West Vancouver and the North shore passing Indian Arm ( watch for Simon Fraser University on the South side) and the Port Moody, Burrard Inlet to Pitt Lake area. We then head South from Sheridan Hill after calling the Pitt Meadows control tower to let the controller know that we will be inbound for landing at the Pitt Meadows Airport. This incredible, breathtaking adventure is about 3 hours long and is well worth the $$$.
